QUILTS QUILTS AND MORE QUILTS

One of the ideas cooking in the back of my mind is to develop a art journaling project centered around the theme of houses, homes, the comfort of home, castle in the sky ... you know ... It just takes a heap of living to make a house a home. I just love that quote and have used it several times on house themed pieced quilts I've done over the years. I made house quilts for each of the kids when they moved out of our house and on their own out in the world. And when I go into Boston to visit Toby, Andrea, and the kids I sleep under their house quilt.
This quilt has special meaning to me because of everything that was gong on in my life when I purchased the kit. It is adapted from a Thimbleberries quilt kit that came out on the market during the late 90's as a block of the month project. I found it when I was traveling between Portland and Grants Pass regularly to visit my mom in the care center as she began failing quite quickly. My heart was heavy with grief and tired for her and her physical trials. She and I had loved quilting together, so it seemed fitting when I saw this kit that it might be something for us to talk about and engage her with the process of cutting and piecing blocks to help pass the time.
Every time I pull this quilt up under my chin when I visit Toby and Andrea, I remember those special times with my mother, and I think of all the "living" that's still going on ... the continual making of homes as this quilt is passed from our house to Toby and Andrea's house, and as we work to make our NEW house into a home.
So you can imagine my delight when I took advantage of the new free e-book offer from Cloth Paper Scissors and the first project (with instructions!) was presented by Lynne Whipple called "If These Walls Could Talk." I think I've found the next step in the planning process for making my House Art Journal project become a reality. My plan: I'd like to take her idea and adapt it to stitching out on the Statler because I'd like to make more than one of these little house "quilts" and can see where having the blank templates all stitched out, just like prepping background pages for a paper art journal, could help facilitate the process. Hmmmm ... thinking, scheming, planning, and plotting :)
