TAKING TIME TO BREATHE
Posted by mountaintopquilting on Thursday, March 3rd, 2011
In all the hustle bustle of the world, the chaotic noise. motion and commotion that surrounds us in our dailey lives, the sheer sensory overload that bombards us to the very core of our souls, it is very easy to forget to listen to that little creative voice inside of us that cries out for attention. It needs nuturing; it begs for time and attention ... not much ... just a little here and there on a regular basis.
As we feed our creativity it will grow strong and become healthy. It will flourish and thrive. At the same time, we will notice our lives becoming more balanced, more centered, more focused. Our physical and mental state will become more healthy and our outlook on life more positive.
I encourage you to set aside time each week for an artist's date. Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way, defines the artist's date as a "pre-panned solitary activitiy aimed at nuturing the creative consiousness."
These are some of the things I've done on my artist's dates over the years:
-
grab my camera and go for a photo walk or a photo drive
-
hanging out in a coffee shop and write in my journal or work in my sketchbook
-
soak in the tub filled with bubble bath and read a good book
-
browse throught the art section of the local book store or library (I usually end up buying the most recent issues of my favorite inspirational magazines from Somerset Studios or Interweave)
-
going through on-line galleries leaving love for the creators of work that ignites a spark or makes a connection with me in some way
-
working on my art journal or my journal quilt projects
-
attending a concert at the hall or in the park
-
spending time in the vegetable garden
-
arranging fresh-cut flowers in a pretty vase
-
enjoy an hour of meditation with an eye mask and aroma therapy
-
wander through a museum or gallery
-
organize my art/quilting supplies and stash
-
working out a plan of action for the next project
-
researching new techniques on-line and in the library
-
test a new recipe with camera at the ready for foodie photos
-
hike a new trail
-
meditate on a mountaintop
-
soak up the rays on a blanket in the park with eyes closed concentrating on all the sounds around me
Enjoy a video treat of inspiration and ideas for going on an artist's date:
... be brave ... be bold ...
Make and share the music of your soul.
