    NATIONAL QLTNG DAY

I hope you're able to celebrate this day set aside just for us quilters working on your favorite projects, finishing up a UFO (an unfinished quilted object) shop-hopping with friends, taking a quilt class, or even participating in one of the many on-line National Quilting Day mystery quilt events.

Quilting has a strong tradition in our family with both of my grandmothers being quilters. To this day, I can still see Granny C's bedroom with her bed always made neatly topped with a tied quilt on top ... bright color squares and scraps of fabric from old shirts, worn dresses, pieces salvaged from other ravaged quilts. Gives us pause when we talk about recycling, repurposing, and restyling in our day and age.

My mother was a quilter. I have two of her quilts and several quilts we made together. I also have a quilt from her mother made from my dresses worn during my early elementary years. Mike's grandmother was a quilter too. She made a beautiful quilt with matching pillows as a wedding gift for us 41 years ago. Treasured family memories and heirlooms.

Today, to celebrate National Quilting Day I will be working on three different projects.

    1. I will be working on a quilt little dish mat ... a great stash buster while re-purposing worn towels. Check back for a post about it next week.
    2. I will be working on my Christmas exchange blocks for our round robin groups with the Scrappy Sisters. We're filling a 24"x24" area with blocks of our choice. We are in groups of 4 so I will be making 4 sets of my blocks. 3 sets are due to be mailed by the second Saturday in May. We have 12 people total participating in the exchange and there will be one block that the group chooses for me to make for everyone participating in this activity. I've heard through the grapevine that the first two rounds finished by the other gals in my group are on their way. Much excitement checking the post each day. Watch for pictures to be posted soon.
    3. I will be working on my new pattern to be released at Internation Spring Market 2011 in Salt Lake ... Crystal Caves. This pattern was designed for a Northcott collection called Stonehenge ... a group of fabrics that just have wonderful blending of colors across the yardage and look just like stone with veins of color and texture ... wonderful areas of what I call "light-givers." The designer added a coordinating collection called Warm Skins. Even though I have a leopard print chair, I don't usually choose animal skin prints for my quilts or clothing. So this has been a great challenge for me to work with "new" fabrics. A great stretch pushing me to think outside the box.

If you're a Statler quilter, be sure you take advantage of the coupon sale going on right now ... 25% mark downs on most Statler patterns. Enter the code ... celebrate_quilting ... to get your discount when you checkout. And don't miss out on the March Newsletter (see link below) ... I've heard there is a free block pattern to be had!

Have a great day of quilting activities with family and/or friends.

    ... be bold ...   ... be brave ...

... make and share the music of your soul ...
